Wellness Initiative for Working Parents — At-Home Learning Resources

The spread of COVID-19 has impacted various elements of our lives. While many working adults have been navigating the adjustment to working from home, those who are parents may also be faced with having their children's education shifting to at-home as well.  Parents also often face the dilemma of wanting to keep kids engaged while also needing to do other things, like accomplish tasks and participate in work meetings.

To help, below is a list of websites that we have compiled for parents to aid in managing at-home learning for children. Many of the resources are free while some require paid subscriptions.

On-Demand Virtual Childcare

Flexable — On-demand, virtual childcare for children ages 3 – 10; designed to fill in childcare gaps. Options include 1-on-1 care as well as group care, in a mini-camp, age-separated format.

General Educational Resources

PBSLearning Media — Your destination for direct access to thousands of classroom-ready, curriculum-targeted digital resources aligned to Common Core and national and state standards.

Khan Academy — Daily schedules available for students ages 2 – 18.

Coursera — For older children, this could be a great time to explore new fields with online courses from world-class universities and companies.

Outschool — 50,000+ unique online classes span all subjects; classes meet via group video chat for a social (as well as educational) experience.

Discovery Education — Discovery Education provides digital curriculum and textbooks for students K – 12.

350+ Amazing Online Learning Resources — A list of over 350 online educational resources for students of all ages and their parents. The majority of resources are free during school closures.

Best Podcasts for Kids in Elementary, Middle and High School — Teachers share the 25+ best podcasts for students to listen to and learn from.

35 Must-Watch TED Talks for Students — Here are some of the best TED Talks students (and parents) will find informative, funny and uplifting.

BrainPop — They provide over 1,000 short animated movies for students in grades K – 12 that are combined with quizzes and related materials covering the subjects of science, social studies, English, math, engineering and technology, health, and arts and music.

English and Foreign Language Lessons

Rosetta Stone — The language learning provider has made their courses free to students for three months.

Duolingo — Free language lessons.

Quill — Free writing and grammar activities for children grades K – 12.

Pobble 365 — A daily image is published as a basis for creative writing. Story starters, questions and drawing ideas are provided to help students get started.

Purple Mash — Each week, a selection of daily activities is produced on different subjects, including comprehension and grammar.

Best Reading Apps for Kids and Teens — Some of the reading apps for kids on this list help them learn important skills, while others provide libraries of books for storytime or independent reading. Either way, these apps support reading in a meaningful and engaging way that kids will enjoy.

Awesome Websites for Practicing Reading — A list of the best reading websites out there that are intuitive and fun for practicing reading.

Unite For Literacy Online Library — Provides free access to more than 400 original picture books, one fourth of them written in Spanish. The digital books provide audio narrations in more than 40 languages, spoken by native speakers.

Math Lessons

SplashLearn — Interactive math learning curriculum for kids in grades K – 5.

OnLine Math Learning — Free online math help, math fun and other useful resources including quizzes, practice and homework help for grades K – 1.

Hotmath — Homework assistance for high school and college students, using “worked out” examples of math problems.

MathPlayground — More than 425 math games, logic puzzles and brain workouts for students to practice their math skills.

PBS Mathclub — From PBS Learning Media, middle schoolers (Grades 6 – 9) will love this entertaining video blog. Not only does each episode cover Common Core standards, it makes math learning culturally relevant with pop-culture references.

Science Lessons

Kids Science — Learn more about the amazing world of science by enjoying fun science experiments, sports, cool facts, do it yourself science projects and more for elementary school-aged kids.

Mystery Science — Encourage young learners to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to real-life scenarios set in digital video mini-lessons. For example, “Were dragons ever real?” “How do germs get inside your body?” “Who invented pizza?” Designed for K – 5.

Best Science Websites for Middle and High School — These websites will help supplement material in all middle and high school science subjects. Fields of study to choose from include biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental science and physics.

SciShow — New uploads every day – Sundays: miscellaneous topics, Monday: ‘Weird World’ topics, Tuesdays: answers to quick questions, Wednesdays: talk or quiz show with a guest, Thursday: wonders of the world, Friday: latest in science news and Saturdays: quick questions answered.

Tynker — Tynker is a platform for children that integrates coding education for children as young as 5. It integrates logic problems, STEM projects, and code with kids’ interests – like Minecraft, Barbie, Legos, Hotwheels, etc. into over 3,700 learning modules.

Code.org — Learn computer science with lessons suitable for children from grade K – 12.

Physical and Mental Health-Focused

Cosmic Yoga — Yoga, mindfulness and relaxation for kids. Interactive adventures that build strength, balance and confidence.

Super Movers — A collaboration between the BBC and the Premier League, with plenty of resources to help get kids moving, even in limited spaces. 

PE with Joe — 30-minute PE classes available.

Go Noodle — GoNoodle videos get kids moving to be their strongest, bravest, silliest, smartest, bestest selves. Over 14 million kids each month are dancing, stretching, running, jumping, deep breathing, and wiggling with GoNoodle.

Fun Activities

Discovery Education Virtual Field Trips — Go beyond the classroom walls and explore some of the world’s most iconic destinations — no permission slips required.

Art Hub for Kids — Art projects kids can follow along and do together; many of the lessons are perfect for any age. All you need is a few supplies!

Minecraft — The people at Minecraft have made its educational worlds available for free, to help pupils stay entertained while at home.

Audible — The Amazon audiobook library has made hundreds of audiobooks free for infants through 18-year-olds.

Virtual Storytime — As libraries are closing, some are choosing to host virtual programming.

Google Arts & Culture — From virtual museum tours to underwater coral videos, there is plenty here to keep children entertained.

Google Earth — Discover the world’s tallest mountains and busiest cities.

Tate Kids — Featuring arts-and-crafts projects as well as art history lessons.

National Geographic Kids — Videos, science experiments, games and quizzes about animals, wildlife and more.
