Loeb & Loeb Represents Weidner Sports in Purchase of Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC

Loeb & Loeb represented Weidner Sports, an affiliate of Weidner Apartment Homes—the 12th largest apartment owner in the U.S. and a major real estate investor in Colorado Springs—in its purchase of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks Football Club, a professional soccer team and the reigning 2024 United Soccer League (USL) Championship titleholders. Weidner was a minority investor in the team for multiple years before acquiring full ownership.

The partnership with Weidner, owned by Colorado Springs native Dean Weidner, has been pivotal in the club’s development, including the creation of Weidner Field, an 8,000-seat stadium that opened in 2020. The stadium has become a vital part of the city’s sports culture, attracting record crowds, including a sell-out for the 2024 USL Championship Final.

The Loeb team provided comprehensive representation to Weidner throughout the acquisition, from preparing and negotiating the transaction documents to advising on USL league matters and employment-related issues. This transaction stands out not only as a significant acquisition of controlling ownership in a USL team, but also for the rare sale of the reigning USL Championship titleholder.

The Loeb team was led by Brian Socolow, chair of the firm’s Sports practice, and Ronelle Porter, deputy chair of the Capital Markets & Corporate department, and included Employment & Labor partner Sarina Saluja and Capital Markets & Corporate associate Andrew Ravits.
