Loeb & Loeb is pleased to announce that Trusts & Estates partner Leah Bishop, Real Estate paralegal Diane Harris, Advanced Media & Technology of counsel Eyvonne Mallett and Advanced Media & Technology senior counsel John Monterubio have been awarded the firm’s 2024 Top Pro Bono Contributor Award for going above and beyond in their pro bono work in the previous year.
Illustrating the extensive reach of the firm's pro bono program, their efforts involve various initiatives. These include aiding in the establishment of a new legal assistance program for the LGBTQIA+ community, obtaining approval from the Veterans Affairs (VA) to utilize their electronics benefits management system, advocating for a disabled veteran to receive full benefits from the VA, and representing two children seeking asylum in the U.S., among other numerous endeavors.
To recognize their commitment to pro bono service, each recipient will have the opportunity to select a legal service organization or nonprofit for which the firm has done pro bono work in the past year and donate $1,000 at the firm’s expense. The four recipients will be celebrated at a firmwide Pro Bono Recognition Reception on March 14, 2024.
Below are summaries of the exceptional pro bono work undertaken by each recipient in 2023.
Leah Bishop – Los Angeles
In 2023, Leah devoted substantial time to two pro bono initiatives. The bulk of her efforts centered around aiding The Rape Foundation (TRF), an organization dedicated to providing treatment for victims of rape, sexual assault and various forms of sexual abuse, along with implementing education initiatives to diminish the occurrence of such violence and conducting training programs for police and other service providers. Leah, who had been involved with TRF since 2013, played a key role in the organization's move to UCLA, ensuring the continued success of its comprehensive programs. Concurrently, she supported the creation of Inland Counties Legal Services’ new pro bono clinic dedicated to helping LGBTQIA+ individuals craft advance health care directives, or written documents stating how an individual wants medical decisions to be made if they lose the ability to make them for themselves. Leah's active involvement and encouragement were pivotal to the clinic's success, and she played a key role in creating the necessary legal documents for the program.
Diane Harris – New York
Diane plays a vital role as a pro bono volunteer, providing crucial support to four Loeb teams within the Veterans Assistance Project, which provides pro bono assistance to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces in connection with service-connected disability benefits claims. She secured approval from the VA to utilize the electronics benefits management system, a complex process that proves invaluable for the teams. Diane's adeptness in accessing records and facilitating communication between the teams and the VA has significantly expedited outcomes and enhanced overall efficiency in our cases.
Eyvonne Mallett – Washington, D.C.
Eyvonne joined Loeb in May 2022 and immediately dove into assisting with the firm's pro bono initiatives. Her involvement spans various matters, collaborating with organizations like Saving Innocence, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Kids in Need of Defense, Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, Chicago Appleseed, College Access Consortium of New York and the Veterans Assistance Project. The majority of Eyvonne's dedicated hours in 2023 were directed towards Chicago Appleseed’s Court Watch Project, focusing on data collection for the court system to ensure fair and equitable access. Moreover, her ongoing pro bono involvement in the Veterans Assistance Project revolves around representing a disabled veteran in obtaining full benefits from the VA.
John Monterubio – New York
John is a dedicated member of the New York office’s Pro Bono Committee, consistently undertaking pro bono assignments. His pro bono efforts remain strong year after year, and his commitment to his pro bono clients is exemplary. He works on matters related to his primary practice within the Advanced Media & Technology department, including supporting the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and mental health organization for members of the LGBTQ+ community, and Musicians on Call, an organization offering live music to those in hospitals requiring care. Furthermore, he extends his efforts beyond his practice group, taking on tasks such as providing asylum assistance to two children seeking refuge in the U.S. and aiding an individual from Myanmar on his application of Legal Permanent Residence.
