Alumni Q&A with Cherice Landers

Catch us up! Where have you been since Loeb?

I left Loeb to join Flexport, a tech startup that focuses on supply chain management and logistics in the freight forwarding industry. I was commercial counsel for Flexport Capital, the trade finance group that provides financial resources to Flexport’s shipping customers. I then joined Delta Air Lines in October 2022 as senior corporate counsel in the Technology and Commercial Transactions group. This latest move to Delta involved more than a job switch; it meant moving cities as well, from Brooklyn, New York, to Atlanta, Georgia.

Is there anything you learned at Loeb that you’ve taken with you to your current role or any of the other roles you’ve had?

While I was at Flexport, I directly applied the skills I learned in Loeb’s Finance department to help develop the Flexport Capital finance product. Through representing a variety of lenders in a range of different lending transactions during my time at Loeb, I developed a solid understanding of the fundamentals of lending and the typical concerns of lenders and borrowers entering financing transactions. With that experience and knowledge under my belt, I was quickly and effectively able to build out templates for Flexport Capital, help refine its underwriting policies, and support negotiations with Flexport Capital’s borrowers and its own lenders. 

At Delta, I have a broader commercial focus, but I still lean on the fundamental skills I developed at Loeb regarding structuring transactions, negotiating agreements and building trusted relationships, both with clients and with colleagues.

Can you share a specific Loeb memory that you are fond of? It can be a person, a place, an occurrence, etc.

It’s hard to pinpoint one specific memory out of many. Loeb was a great place to work! One of my favorite experiences was being in the Attorneys of Color and Ethnic Diversity group, where I was co-chair with Jessica Lee and Nerissa McGinn was a partner adviser. In that role, I brainstormed and worked closely with the two of them to help further the firm’s efforts to recruit and retain diverse associates and partners and create a supportive community. As part of Loeb’s commitment to increasing and supporting diverse talent, I was encouraged to participate in initiatives like the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD), in which Loeb is an active participant. I really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the LCLD program; it was a wonderful opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with lawyers from around the nation about leadership development and supporting the growth of leaders of color within the legal industry, as well as an opportunity to share that knowledge with my colleagues at Loeb.  

Outside work, I loved the monthly birthday celebrations in the New York office. It was the perfect excuse to take a break from work and interact with a cross-section of people at Loeb, drawn from across the firm. These kinds of opportunities are so important to connect with colleagues on a personal level and build in moments of balance within the workday.

What did you like most about working at Loeb?  

What I liked most were my colleagues. I had the pleasure of working with very knowledgeable, kind and supportive people. I grew a lot during my time at Loeb because of the mentorship and guidance I received from other associates and partners in the Finance department and beyond. I am still close friends with many of the people I met at Loeb. 

What does being a part of Loeb Reconnected, Loeb’s alumni community, mean to you?

Loeb Reconnected offers an opportunity to stay connected with the great colleagues I worked with at Loeb and to meet other alumni I hadn’t had an opportunity to know during my time at the firm. It also provides a trusted network of legal professionals and resources that I can tap into as needed in my professional career. Since going in-house, I have exchanged ideas with current and former Loeb lawyers from time to time when complex matters arise. I am able to stay in touch with my colleagues and mentors through Loeb Reconnected, and I really value that.
