Loeb & Loeb is proud to support the development of the “People’s Fund of Maui,” a fund launched by Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson, and hosted by the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), in order to distribute cash directly to those who were displaced and affected by the devastating wildfires in Maui.
In collaboration with an advisory board, the local community and respected elders, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson announced the launch of the fund on NBC’s Today Show that will bring any adult resident aged 18 and above, residing in the wildfire-impacted regions of Lahaina and Kula, a monthly aid of $1,200 to assist them during this recovery period. To learn more about the fund and its mission visit the People’s Fund of Maui website.
“This project reflects the very best of philanthropy and collaboration in the disaster relief context. Representing Oprah Winfrey and The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation, we provided counsel to respond to an imminent need on a massive scale. We are grateful to lend a hand in creating a financial structure that can assist in rebuilding this community and hopefully bring some relief to impacted residents,” says Diara Holmes, co-chair of the firm’s Nonprofits & Tax-Exempt Organizations practice.
In addition to partner Diara Holmes, the Loeb team that advised Oprah Winfrey and The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation in connection with the establishment of the fund included Nonprofits and Tax-Exempt Organizations partner Kimberly Eney and Marc Chamlin, Chair of the firm’s Television practice.
