Former Governor Gray Davis Receives Presidential Medal from the University of California

Former California Governor and Loeb & Loeb Of Counsel Gray Davis has received the University of California’s (UC’s) highest honor, the UC Presidential Medal. Individuals awarded this recognition have made extraordinary contributions to UC and demonstrated exceptional leadership, vision, and dedication to the broader advancement of education and society. Loeb & Loeb congratulates Governor Davis. 

Throughout his distinguished career, the former Governor has been a constant source of inspiration in public service and education. As Governor, he prioritized public education, expanded access to higher education, and fostered innovation. His efforts included creating four Institutes for Science and Innovation at UC on nine campuses. These Institutes not only make breakthrough scientific discoveries, but all of them are incubating startups that are attracting global investment. 

Governor Davis successfully overcame decades of political and legal roadblocks and led the efforts to open UC Merced’s doors, the newest UC and the first research University of the 21st Century. After leaving office, he volunteered his time and worked alongside UC San Diego faculty, Cal Fire, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory to catalyze the use of infrared cameras that are better able to detect wildfires. Today, over a thousand infrared cameras protect Californians from wildfires. His impactful leadership extends far beyond the University of California, enhancing the broader community.

The Governor was presented the medal during a dinner ceremony hosted by UC on September 20. In awarding the medal President Drake said, “Gov. Davis held fast to a vision for expanding access and enhancing new knowledge creation — and that has proven to be a sound investment for the state of California.” Others honored Governor Davis for his legacy. “Governor Davis has been a beacon of inspiration throughout his illustrious career, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of public service and education,” said UC Board of Regents Chair Richard Leib.
