Karen Thorland has experience in a broad range of commercial litigation and intellectual property matters, including copyright and trademark, trade secrets, civil fraud, unfair competition, consumer protection actions, business torts, rights of publicity and privacy, First Amendment, entertainment contractual disputes and appeals. Ms. Thorland also counsels and defends clients in connection with marketing and advertising regulatory issues.
She has represented prominent entertainment industry clients, including major and independent film studios, producers and music companies, as well as interactive companies, internet marketers and advertisers. Ms. Thorland is on the Editorial Board of the Loeb & Loeb IP/Entertainment Case Law Weekly Update for Motion Picture Studios and Television Networks.
Ms. Thorland has undertaken pro bono publico work on behalf of Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles, The Rape Treatment Center at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital and the ACLU Foundation.

Prior to joining Loeb & Loeb LLP, Ms. Thorland was an associate at Jones Day from 1994 to 2001.

Defended music publishing company against a declaratory relief action by karaoke product manufacturer involving the scope of compulsory licenses and the fair use doctrine and obtained a dismissal with prejudice without leave to amend (Leadsinger v. BMG Music Publishing, 429 F.Supp.2d 1190 (C.D.Cal. 2005)); District Court decision upheld on appeal to Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (Leadsinger v. BMG Music Publishing, 512 F.3d 522 (9th Cir. 2008))

Co-lead counsel for MPAA member companies in national anti-piracy litigation campaign related to peer-to-peer file-trading.

Represented film studio in a copyright infringement action related to the DVD release of Rosemary's Baby resulting in settlement (Hatami v. Paramount Pictures)

Counsel for motion picture production company in a suit resulting in summary judgment dismissal of claims related to profit participation and the award of credits; affirmed on appeal (Melchior v. New Line Productions)
